Chatham County has enjoyed the benefits of SPLOST since the State of Georgia first made the additional sales tax legal in 1985. Chatham County voters have passed the tax every in every continuation vote since, generating over $2.2 billion in revenue.
That money has funded many roads, drainage, recreation, economic development and civic projects, many of which are enjoyed daily by Chatham County residents.
SPLOST 7 will help Chatham County fund the Early Childhood Learning Center, a collaborative project with the City of Savannah and East Savannah United, which will serve children from six weeks to four years old. SPLOST will provide $10.4 million.
Other buildings funded by SPLOSTs include National Museum of the Mighty Eighth Air Force, the Eugene H. Gadsden Courthouse, and The Chatham County Annex which houses the tax commissioner, Chatham Police headquarters, and E-911.
The section of Pooler Parkway that runs from Quacco Road to Pine Barren Road was made possible by SPLOST, as well as the Pooler Parkway interchange with I-16. SPLOST provided enough funding to leverage the Georgia Department of Transportation to provide over $4 million in funding for this project.
SPLOST has also funded parks, including the improvements to L. Scott Stell Park, Mother Matilda Beasly Park, and Lake Mayer.
